Pear Pickin’ Cow
Pear season is a much anticipated event around the farm – for humans as well as cows. Usually, we let the cows get the pears off the lower branches that they can reach, then we’ll send them out to another field so we can pick the rest. Well, we just always assumed that the pears the cows got were only the ones on the lower branches, and that the other ones just fell off when they got too ripe – until my sister-in-law witnessed what I’m about to describe! She walked out her back door one day to see one of the cows – specifically, her cow Fred – “picking” pears! That crazy cow stretched her neck up to one of the lower branches, then lowered her head as close to the ground as she could. And would you believe it! – she let go of that branch and it flew up and knocked a whole mess of pears down onto the ground!!! I’m not even kidding here! Then she looked around to see if anyone was watching or if anyone wanted to share, and she proceeded to eat as much as she could! Really! It’s true! Can you imagine such a thing!
